Avid is one of the biggest manufacturers of professional editing software in the world today. Their 'Media Composer' software has become an industry standard and is used for both online editing and offline editing.

Media Composer has in the past required the use of Avid hardware. This has made it quite expensive, but also extremely powerful. In 2006, Avid announced the availability of Media Composer as a software-only option for the first time. This more affordable version is hardware-independent and runs on Mac and Windows computer systems.
