Mecha Musume

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mecha Musume (メカ娘 meka musume?, lit. mecha girls) are an Internet phenomenon similar to the OS-tans. Like the OS-tans they are personifications, but of military hardware ("mecha" in its Japanese meaning, like tanks, aircraft, ships and in slightly rarer cases, ICBMs and other ordnance) instead of operating systems.

Mecha Musume often incorporates various other anime/manga themes such as animal ears, maids and uniforms. An example are shinto shrine maidens, which are common for WWII Japanese aircraft and ships.

MS shōjo (or Gundam girls) are another type of mecha musumes. They preceded the trend of turning real life weapons into girls as Gundam girls first appeared in print in the 1980s. MS bishōjo are girls drawn wearing helmets and armor designed to resemble various mobile suits, usually gundams or zakus. fanart of girls drawn to resemble mecha from other anime are also popular, and show up regularly on imageboards.

Konami has released sets of Mecha Musume collectible figures representing World War II military vehicles such as the M4 Sherman and Valentine tanks, as well as a single large 1/9 scale figure based on the Messerschmitt Bf 109.

A Mecha Musume-themed anime OVA called "Strike Witches" is under production by the Japanese animation studio GONZO, and is set to be released in late 2006, Another anime "Sky Girls" is being produced by J.C.STAFF and Konami and is more futuristic in theme.
