MCW Metrorider

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The MCW Metrorider was a midibus designed and built by Metro Cammell Weymann between 1986 and 1989.

Constructed in two lengths, 7.0 m and 8.4 m, the Metrorider was an integral bus, marking it out from its van-based rivals, along with its increased seating capacity - around 33 could be seated in the 8.4 m version. Power came from a Cummins B-series (or Perkins) engine mounted in the front of the bus, ahead of the driver. Transmission was by an Allison AT545 unit. The design suited one-man bus operation well, and despite the somewhat simplistic styling, the Metrorider sold in large numbers in the United Kingdom. Also, a number of Metroriders were exported to Continental Europe and Hong Kong.

When MCW ended production, Optare bought the design rights of this model, along with those of MCW's Metrobus, and reproduced it as the Optare MetroRider.
