M.C. Magic, a disc jockey who grew up in a low income housing area in Avondale, Arizona, loved music from as far back as he can remember. His influences include Zap & Roger, as he soon came to master the talk-box.
[edit] Overview
In 1991, now in Phoenix, Arizona, Magic formed his independent record company called Nastyboy Records. His first hit single, under that label, was "Lost in Love". It gained popularity among females and mainly in Hispanic demographics.
With his new label underway, MC Magic found himself opening the doors for new talent. He forming a group in 1995. They became "Nastyboy Klick", with members MC Magic, Zigg-Zagg, Dos, Sly, Mischief (Magic's 10 year old son) and Bookie. Bookie soon left the group to pursue a solo project before NBK became successful.
One trait that has made MC Magic successful is the use of the talk-box. Most people refer to this as 'the Zap & Roger Voice'. Before Magic mastered this tool, he needed that sound on a new song that he was working on. With that, he contacted the management of Zapp and Roger. Eventually getting in touch with Roger Troutman, Roger agreed to assist Nastyboy Klick with vocals on "Down for Yours" using the famous Talk-box. All the hard work paid off, as "Down for Yours" topped the Billboard charts at the #10 slot for hot rap single chart (a first for any hip-hop group out of Phoenix).
In 2001, they under went a name change. This came to bring a fresher name and to recognize the now three man team (MC Magic, Zigg-Zagg and Dos). They became known as "NB Ridaz".
The latest change up of the group came in late 2005. MC Magic decided to release a new solo CD that he had been in the works for. The remaining group members did what was best for themselves. As Magic went on his own, Zigg-Zagg and Dos re-joined 'Upstairs Records'. They later formed "The New Ridaz" teaming up with recording artist Angelina, who was featured on the first hit single as NB Ridaz "Runaway".
May of 2006 marked the release of MC Magic's new solo Album titled "Magic City" www.MagicAZ.com. This featured many other talents in the industry, next to his own style. With the release of Magic City included tours to record stores to sign CDs and hand out posters. His new CD also followed an interview with DJ Toby, Program director and Morning DJ on KSIQ-FM, as Magic told the story of how he got to where he is today. Magic has become close friends with radio Program Directors across the US. Magic has also done custom songs for radio shows, such as "Sunday Night Slow Jams" with R Dub! This show is heard throughout the US on over 30 different stations.
