[edit] Taking over RETF

Hi mboverload, You noted in the spamlist that you wanted someone to take over WP:RETF. I'd be happy to, as you know I'm familiar with the system, having made my own (which, suffice to say, broke - as you also know), and I could note any suggestions, monitor the list of common mistakes for machines etc. I have some time on my hands, so I could check the project page a few times a day and answer support queries. Please let me know of your decision, here or on my talk page. --Draicone (talk) 06:28, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Sure. I already have two developers to fix errors as they come up, but I recognize you as someone who would truly develop and make RETF better. Who knows where it will be by the time I get back. Please get on irc or send me an email mbovrldalt_ AT _gmail.com --mboverload@ 09:33, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Hi, I have moved the typos to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos, they will be loaded automatically when the typofixing is enabled, hopefully this will mean that lots of people can easily help fix and add to them, whilst also meaning that everyone will have the most up-to-date version and not have to worry about getting the newest file etc. Martin 12:57, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
I'd also be happy to help in any way I can. --Guinnog 13:11, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
All changes should be made to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos, when the next version is released this page will be used. This is definately the best way to do it, so from now on the system should remain fairly stable, and there shouldnt be any more sweeping changes. Martin 22:31, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
The page is only semi-protected, so virtually everyone can still edit it. Martin 08:30, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't feel the same way as you about this one... Fredil Yupigo 00:52, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Spellfixno?

Hi, what is the significance of this edit? Just curious... User:Angr 08:43, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Oh, so anyone using WP:RETF can't spellfix it, no matter how stoned they are, since the article includes a word that would normally be a misspelling. They should be paying attention, and I think they do, but I just want to make sure. --mboverload@ 08:50, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh, okay. Thanks! It's comforting to know we have stoners doing our spellchecking... User:Angr 09:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Two things

Hi Mb:

  1. In this series of your edits something strange seems to have happened. Phil's signature lookes somewhat borked.
  2. All the best to you for your next months, I hope to see you back again after your break!

[edit] RETF

Hey Mboverload,

This is probably too late, since I saw you're leaving for at least six months (which is a shame, by the way; we need more spelling-fixers here), but is there a way you can add "her's" to RETF? I've caught this a lot of times using AWB manually (google wikipedia searches for all instances of the word "her's"). I very commonly do Google Wikipedia searches for misspellings and apostrophe abuse. "To it's", "for it's" "by it's", "on it's", "with it's", "under it's", etc, and these have to be done semi-manually because there are legitimate instances where they are correct, but "her's" is never correct, and I feel it can be safely added, unless you think it will accidentally catch words like "father's"?

Anyway, enjoy your wikibreak. After all the fixes here on Wikipedia, you deserve it! Happy wikibreak! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 02:34, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, they are case sensitive. Martin 08:11, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Typo fixes

Note that here and here no typo were fixed, just unicodyfing. As such, your edit summary is not accurate. Are you doing unicodyfing on purpose or that's a bug in your AWB code? You can reply here, thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:29, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

AWB Unicodifies pages if you tell it to. That page didn't have a typo to fix but stuff to convert into unicode. --mboverload@ 22:05, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your image

Hi Mboverload! Really sad to see you're leaving. I just wanted to say that the image that you uploaded (Image:Gift to wikipedia.jpg) is freakin' awesome! Did you really take that picture? I wish I could take pictures like that ;-). Hopefully I'll see you around when you're back! —Mets501 (If responding, please do so on my talk page) 22:18, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] William Durden

Hi, Mboverload. I see that you've edited William Durden in the past few weeks. I was wondering if you might put it on your watchlist for a few days. I'm having a bit of a dispute with User talk:Frankie1969 (talk) regarding the inclusion/exclusion of copied material in the article. Thanks! -Medtopic 04:07, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Error using AWB

Your edit of 23:17, 11 August 2006 using AWB at In Death Characters changed "immedately" to "iimmediately" which is also incorrect. I corrected it, but you may have committed other similar errors. Please check. JRSpriggs 06:05, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

You also changed a misspelling of "unanimous" to "unanimouss" with an extra "s". Please be more careful. VERIFY THE SPELLING OF THE CORRECTED VERSION before you do a replacement. JRSpriggs 05:32, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos

Hi, are you using Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos, because i was just about to fill the word attribute in a semi automatic fashion, but it has the inuses tag. Martin 15:32, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alterior

I'm puzzled.

What does this one do?

<Typo word="Alterior" find="\b(A|a)lterior\b" replace="$1lterior" />

Euchiasmus 13:00, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

looks like it does nothing at all. alphaChimp laudare 05:40, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Regex design - matching the correct spelling

Hi Mboverload, how important is it that the find regex should not match the correct spelling of the word in question?

I've been going to great lengths to ensure that the correct spelling doesn't match, but I've noticed that a number of patterns I've replaced do match the correct spelling. I figured that these would probably replace a word with itself, then display no differences when AWB pauses for you to Save or Ignore (I do sometimes get this symptom when using AWB). Since the correct spelling occurs (I hope) much more frequently than the typos, I was thinking that these "identical replacement" actions would slow the thing down.

If I'm wrong in this, many of the regexes could be shorter and more easy to read - take the middle of my regex for architecture for example

archi(?:ctect|ctech|ctecht|tech|techt)ure

which could be simplified

archic?tec(?:h|t|ht)ure

This dilemma happens so frequently (wherever you have two or more independent parts of the word that may be wrong) that I thought I'd better just check with you... Regards, Euchiasmus 05:57, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I have come across this before and my solution was to just use multiple different lines. I'll be on the AWB irc channel, you should contact Bluemoose as well. --mboverload@ 06:10, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
It makes almost zero difference matching the correct word, yes it might be fractionally slower in one sense, but overall it would be much quicker than having either multiple or much more complicated regexes. Martin 08:52, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ref conv

Sorry for the downtime. References converter is now back up and running. About a week ago the hard drive in my server crashed. Luckily it stayed together long enough to allow me to pull all the data off onto a new hard drive, but I still had to go through the process of installing Linux on the new hard drive, installing all the necessary programs, and loading in all of the old data from the server. I got all of my essential services up within two days (CVS, Apache, Wiki), but I kind of forgot about web scripts, which I finally got around to fixing today. Everything should be fully functional again. If you see any bugs, just send me a message. You are receiving this message because you are on the spamlist.
