Mayo-Smith's Pyramid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A pyramid designed so that it retains a pyramidal shape as it’s being constructed. It is a metaphor used to describe novel and innovative projects that are designed and constructed in ways that reduce costs associated with uncertainty. In contrast to pyramids that are not functional until the final layer is complete (Figure A), Mayo-Smith’s pyramid functions after each layer is added (see Figure B).
Mayo-Smith’s Pyramid is used to describe how it’s possible to develop innovative and novel software projects without knowing the scope, budget and schedule in advance.
