Maylandia lombardoi (Burgess, 1977) |
Maylandia lombardoi, is a 13 cm (5 in) fish from the family Cichlidae. M. lombardoi is endemic to the rocky shores of Mbenji Island, Lake Malawi in east Africa. The species is highly sexually dimorphic, males are bright yellow with faint brown bars crossing the body; fins are plain yellow with egg spots on the anal fin. Female are pale white-blue with several blue-black vertical bands extending into the dorsal fin. However, when mouthbrooding, females may defend a small territory and assume the colouration of males. Like most cichlids, brood care is well-developed. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder.
[edit] In the aquarium
The species is also popular in the aquarium trade. It is often sold under the common names of Lombardoi or Kenyi. It requires a spacious, rocky aquarium. Free-swimming fry regain entry to the female's mouth by direct contact. These fish can be very aggressive. However, if they are content with their environment then they are much more tolerant of other fish. They should be kept with other Malawi Cichlids.
