The genus Maylandia contains around 15 species of cichlids from Lake Malawi in Eastern Africa.
Notwithstanding the contrary view of Stauffer (1997) and Konings (2001, 2005), Maylandia appears to be a valid name for this group of fishes. It has priority over other genus names for this group and is most often, and incorrectly, treated as a junior synonym of Metriaclima (Condé & Géry, 1999; fishbase; Eschmeyer, 2006).
It is the view of Stauffer (1997) and Konings (2001, 2005) that Maylandia is nomen nudem and Metriaclima should be used for this group of fishes. Although this view has been challenged by Condé & Géry (1999), Kullander (1999), Oliver (2002-6) and Eschmeyer (2006), the issue remains a point of contention.
