[edit] A Remark to the Passing Away of Max Merkel

Being the originator of this article I am deeply saddened by his passing away. He will remain deeply engrained with Austrian and German football history.

He will continue to stand for the halcyon days of TSV 1860 Munich, which as we speak manifests itself further as a club not ever likely to return to a semblance of former glory.

Nigh forty years ago he was also the coach who trained the formerly so glorious "Club", the 1.FC Nürnberg" to its last German title for the time being. With this ninth title Nuremberg remains the second most successful club in German history.

This is some information statistics can provide. For his contemporaries he will be forever remembered for his, be it very idiosyncratic, sense of humor.

With his success not only confined to Germany and Austria, but also finding expression in the Netherlands and Spain, he will remain one of the all time greats of the game of the 20th century.

He left behind his wife Marion and daughter Maxi.
