MAXXAM Inc was founded in 1955 and is based in Houston, Texas. It is the owner of several real estate, forest products and racing companies.

The company's forest subsidiaries grow and harvest redwood and Douglas-fir timber and process it into lumber. The company has around 217,000 acres of commercial timberlands in Humboldt County, California, most notably with the Pacific Lumber Company.

Their real estate operations develop and lease commercial and residential properties in California, Arizona, Puerto Rico and Texas.

The racing divisions own and operate horse and greyhound racing facilities in Texas
