Maxwell (surname)

Maxwell  is a Scottish family name from Maccuswell, or Maxwell, a salmon pond on the River Tweed near Kelso bridge1 in Roxburghshire. The family had migrated there from England around a.d. 1100.2 The name means "the pond / stream [Old English well(a)] of Mack [a form of Magnus]."3 The name was first recorded around a.d. 1144 in the form Mackeswell.4
