Maverick Square

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maverick Square is a business district in the Boston neighborhood of East Boston that is intersected by several thoroughfares, most notably Chelsea Street and Meridian Street. It is the location of a station on the Blue Line of the MBTA. The skyline of Downtown Boston can be seen clearly across Boston Harbor from the square.

The nearby Maverick public housing projects have always given the area the reputation as the most crime-ridden in the neighborhood — though in relative terms, as East Boston has generally been one of the safest in the city. Today the projects are being rebuilt. However, in recent years, the area has seen an increase in violence among Lation street gangs, most notably the incredibly violent MS 13 gang.

In recent years almost all of the businesses in Maverick Square have come under the ownership of Latinos that have moved to East Boston in large numbers since 1980.
