Maurice Wilson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maurice Wilson was a British mountain climber who made an attempt at climbing Mount Everest in 1934. He was a relatively unknown climber at the time, and made his attempt on the mountain with the help of a few sherpas, and no other British team members. It is believed that Wilson's attempt was not successful - his body was discovered on a 1935 expedition to Everest, with no evidence of a successful summit. There are eyewitness accounts that a 1960 Chinese expedition discovered an old tent near 8500 meters elevation, higher than anyone was previously believed to have made camp. The camp locations of all of the pre-1960 expeditions to Everest were known, leading some to speculate that this was Wilson's tent, and that being only 350 meters below the summit, he could have possibly made it to the top. However, there is no physical or photographic evidence of this tent, and it has not been located since the 1960 expedition, leading many to doubt its existence.
