Mattie McDonagh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mattie McDonagh (19362005) was a famous Gaelic footballer for County Galway.

Born in Galway, McDonagh was one of the most influential players in the Galway teams of the 1960s. He won 10 Connacht Gaelic Athletic Association football titles with his county and was the scorer of the only goal in Galway's famous three-in-a-row of All-Ireland victories in 1964, 1965 and 1966. His goal in the first half of the 1966 final against Meath had a major bearing on the outcome of the game as it helped the Connacht side establish what proved to be an unassailable eight-point lead. McDonagh is the only Connacht player to have won four senior All-Ireland medals.

Mattie McDonagh died at the age of 68 on April 11, 2005.
