Matthiessen State Park
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Matthiessen State Park is an Illinois state park located a few miles west of the more famous Starved Rock State Park.
The park is near Oglesby, Illinois, a few miles from La Salle, Illinois. It is named for Frederick William Matthiessen, who had originally owned the property, and which he had named Deer Park. The park was donated to the state following Matthiessen's death, and was later renamed in his honor.
The park is centered around a creek that runs from Deer Park Lake to the Vermilion River. The creek has cut partway through the sandstone layers, leaving some interesting rock formations, and a small waterfall named Cascade Falls, in a pleasant and peaceful canyon.
