Matthew Dowdy Shiell

Matthew Dowdy Shiell (1824-1888) was a merchant, ship owner, Methodist lay preacher on the island of Montserrat in the West Indies and first king of Redonda. He is remembered today primarily as the father of the writer M. P. Shiel, who may have been the first native born West Indian novelist.
