Matt McCoy (Iowa)

Matt McCoy is an American politician from Iowa who is currently a member of the Iowa Senate.

He was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1996 after serving two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives, to which he was first elected in 1992. He was re-elected to his Senate seat in 2006.

He represents Senate District 31 - south and southwest Des Moines. In the 2005-6 session, McCoy was Co-Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee and also served on the Commerce, Ways and Means, and Local Government Committees. Additionally, he was a member of the Administration and Regulation Budget Subcommittee.

He graduated from Dowling High School in 1984 and earned his is B.A. degree from Briar Cliff College in 1988. Active in the Boy Scouts of America his entire life, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1981.

McCoy is openly gay and is the only gay member of the Iowa Senate. His 2006 re-election campaign won the backing of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.
