[edit] History
He played a pivotal role in pioneering digital film in the United Kingdom by creating the onedotzero digital film festival in 1996, for which he has garnered praise as a cultural entrepreneur. That event, through its annual festival, sequence of capsule festivals and global screenings, has been responsible for popularising cutting-edge and avant-garde digital animation and film.
He has a background as a film critic, including a role as first contributing editor for the influential style magazine Dazed & Confused.
Hanson created onedotzero in 1996 as a new kind of film festival promoting and producing cutting-edge moving image. Citing a wish to move away from events he exited the festival after directing the first five annual events, to concentrate on writing and new moving image projects. He duly wrote the digital film manifesto and coffee table book, The End of Celluloid, and a series of other publications documenting his thoughts on digital film. He is a contributor to RES Magazine, the US magazine of digital filmmaking.
He is the originator of the Creative Commons-licenced film project A Swarm of Angels.
