Matinée Club (formerly called The Modern) are an emerging British band, signed to Universal, on the Mercury Records label. They play music variously described as "electro-pop" or "synth-pop" by reviews [1] [2] [3]
They have thus far had one top-40 single, "Jane Falls Down", which was released on November 14, 2005, and charted at number 35 in the Official UK Singles Chart. Their second single, "Industry", was released on March 6, 2006 and was disqualified from the UK charts. [4]. An album, Life in the Modern World was scheduled for release in Summer/Autumn 2006. An EP The Dirty Blonde is due for release on the American label Ninthwave Records in early 2007.
The band have conducted tours in support of these singles, and before. They played the August 2005 Reading and Leeds Festivals and the October 2005 Whitby Gothic Weekend, and will play the 2006 Elektrofest.
On Saturday 1st July, 2006, they performed at Pride Rally's 'Prides Against Prejudice' at Pride London in Trafalgar Square in support of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered People's right for equality, and in celebration of diversity.
Band members are Nathan Cooper and Chi Tudor-Hart, both from New Cross in South London (keyboards and vocals), Emma Cooke(vocals), Bob Malkowski (drums) and Robert James (guitar).
Unfortunately, in September of 2006, drummer Bob Malkowski and guitarist Robert James left the band. The remaining members released this information on their forum allowing fans to know the news. With this brought a new name for the band: Matinee Club. The band plans on moving ahead releasing the album, along with the next single, Discotheque Francais.
Band member Emma has stated that with signing under a new name, they now have the freedom to do what they want with their music. The Modern had let on that their now-late record label Mercury had restricted the band from doing what they wanted as a band. The Matinee Club are now signed to Planet Clique (UK) and Ninth Wave Recordings (USA), both indie labels.
It is said that Robert will continue to write songs with the band.
