Mathais Point Shoal Light

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mathais Point Shoal Light was a screw-pile lighthouse in the Potomac River in Maryland; the station was located near the Port Tobacco River. Constructed in 1876, it served until being dismantled in 1963.

[edit] History

The light at Mathais Point Shoal was constructed in 1876 to replace the nearby Upper Cedar Point Light. It was an unusual three-tiered structure, described by some as resembling a wedding cake. Fitted with a fifth-order Fresnel lens, the lighthouse was constructed in response to the grounding of a United States Navy vessel near the site. The superstructure was dismantled in 1963 and replaced with a small automated light on the original foundation.
