Mater Dei High School (Breese, Illinois)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mater Dei High School is a diocesan school of about 600 students located in the town of Breese, Illinois. Mater Dei is known as a relatively inexpensive Catholic school, with tuition rates the lowest in the Belleville Diocese and perhaps the lowest in the state of Illinois. Established in 1954, Mater Dei is administered by a principal and an assistant principal under the direction of a school board appointed by individual parishes, and then under the Diocese of Belleville.
Mater Dei has several division AA sports teams, a band, yearbook/newspaper, Pro-Life group, and several other groups. Before being switched to AA under a ruling making Catholic school students worth more than one person that will affect the 2005-6 season, Mater Dei was very competitive in volleyball, often ranking number one in the state, and football, in which it had an 11-1 season in 2003.
The school's principal rival is Central High School. Mater Dei has won the Milk Bowl game, the local high-school rivalry football extravaganza, a solid majority of the years it has existed.
Academically, Mater Dei scores an average of 22 on the ACT (2004).
Recent developments at Mater Dei include the construction of a new east wing, expanding facilities by adding a new band room, weight room, and gym.
