Matale town

Matale is a town in the hill country of Sri Lanka, 96 miles from Colombo. It is an area steeped in history.

The Matale administrative district also contains the historic Sigiriya rock castle, and Dambulla temple.

The town itself is 16 miles from Kandy, another ancient capital where the Temple of the Tooth Relic is found.

The Aluvihare Temple, on the North side of the town is reputed to the place where Bhuddhist teachings were first written in text form on ola leaf.

Surrounding the town are the Knuckles foothills called Wiltshire. It is a mainly agriculural area, where vegetable and spice cultivation dominate.
