Mata Gujri, is considered one of the holiest saints in Sikhism. She played a pivotal role within the Sikh religion as was the wife of Guru Tegh Bahadur (the ninth Guru of Sikhism) and also the mother of Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth Guru of Sikhism). Mata Gujri and the younger Sahibzadey Baba Fateh & Baba Zorawar Singh (the children of Guru Gobind Singh) sought shelter with Gangu who was a servant of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Gangu was the one who betrayed the trust of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Sikhs by reporting to the Mughals where Mata Gujri and the younger Sahibzadey were staying. Mata Gujri was martyred along with two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji; Sahibzadey Baba Zorawar Singh and Sahibzadey Baba Fateh Singh Ji, under the command of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam. Mata Gujri was martyred by being ordered to lay on an ice block and the younger Sahibzadey were bricked alive. While the younger Sahibzadey were being bricked alive they were reciting the holy Japji Sahib.Gurdwara Mata Gujari is a shrine in remberance of the place where Mata Gujri spent her last four days.
