This category for mathematics articles whose importance within mathematics has been assessed on this scale.

[edit] Legend

Need: The article's importance, regardless of its quality

Top Subject is a must-have for a print encyclopedia cat
High Subject contributes a depth of knowledge cat
Mid Subject fills in more minor details cat
Low Subject is peripheral knowledge, possibly trivial cat

Quality: current article quality

Featured article FA Featured article cat
A Article is well written, reasonably complete and referenced; possible featured article candidate. cat
Good article GA This is a good article cat
B+ Very close to a good article, with history, clear explanation, and illustrations. A mathematics-only rating. cat
B We have a decent article, but it needs further editing cat
Start Significant cleanup or expansion needed. cat

[edit] Rating

To rate an article, place the template {{maths rating}} on the article's talk page. Anyone can add a rating or change an existing rating. The class and importance parameters are used to actually rate and article. These parameters will place the article in the appropriate sub category of Category:Mathematics articles by quality and Category:Mathematics articles by importance.

The full syntax of the maths rating template is:

{{maths rating
 |small=
 |class=
 |importance=
 |field=
 |comment=
 }}
  • small=yes can be used when a page has lots of templates, producing a more compact version. Any other value for small parameter is ignored, and the standard template results.
  • Class must be one of:
    FA (for Featured Articles only)
    A
    GA (for Good Articles only)
    Bplus
    B
    Start
    Stub
    Dab (disambiguation pages)
    Cat (mathematics categories)
    Image (mathematics images)
    Template (mathematics templates)
  • Importance must be one of:
    Top
    High
    Mid
    Low
    NA (for non-articles only)
  • field must be one of:
basics (elementary material and terms used throughout mathematics)
    analysis
    algebra
    general
    geometry (includes topology)
    applied
    probability and statistics
    number theory
    discrete
    foundations (logic and set theory)
    Mathematical physics
    history
    mathematicians
  • Comment is used for a brief comment, usually for suggestions on how the article could be improved to bring it up to the next grade. When rating an article, it helpful to at least put ~~~~ as a comment, so that the date of the rating can easily be seen.

If either class or importance is missing, then the article will be placed in Category:Unassessed mathematics articles or Category:Unassessed-importance mathematics articles respectively. The field element is there for future expansion to break articles up by major fields in mathematics, and currently has no effect other than to state the given field in the box. If field is missing, then the article will be placed in Category:Unassessed-field mathematics articles.
