From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After serving as pastor of two Lutheran congregations, Dr. Massie L. Kennard became secretary for program personnel for the Lutheran Church in America's (LCA) Board of American Missions, Chicago in 1968.

In 1972, Kennard became director for special need ministries for the LCA Division for Ministry in North America, New York and became LCA director for racial/ethnic ministries in 1977, a position in which he served until his death in 1986.

His obituary notes that Dr. Kennard "was responsible for providing leadership for the implementation of goals to make the LCA a racially inclusive fellowship and for initiating and coordinating programs for ministry development and enrichment among people of color."

The ELCA commemorates Massie L. Kennard, renewer of the church, 1996.
