Abraham Maslow is considered to be the father of Humanistic Phychology. Maslow’s theory consists around a five stage Hierarchy of Needs diagram which can be seen in the diagram linked to this page. Maslow developed this Hierarchy of Needs model during the 1940-50’s in America by studying students at New York Brooklyn College. Maslow’s theory states that everyone is motivated by needs and this Hierarchy of Needs helps people to understand how these need motivate them. The Hierarchy of Needs proves that each level must be satisfied in turn, starting from the top, for each person to remain motivated in other areas of life. E.G How are you going to motivate someone to meet there targets or work in a team if they are having family problems outside work. This shows how closely linked each of these levels in the Hierarchy are to a persons motivation. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs model has been updated several times over the past centuries but the model which he developed can still be related to the present day factors which management face in the workplace on how to keep their staff motivated.Although the model developed by Maslow is a great method to see how human motivation works, it still is a very broad method. In an ideal world people do move from one step to the next when they fulfill there motivational needs but in reality people and motivation are more complex than this. For most people their motivational needs comprise over most of the levels of the model. Maslow’s model is very simple and needs a lot of thought for it to be worked properly but saying that it is a very useful tool for managers to use to analyse the motivation within their company as a whole and for each individual.
