[edit] Etymology of Chinese names

Hi,

First of all, I would like to thank you for the extensive contributions you have made to Chinese province and city articles. However, I'm not sure about the source you're using for all the "literal" meanings of Chinese placenames, since I don't think they are accurate at all.

To "interpret" a Chinese place name, you shouldn't just take the two characters and stick some sort of plausible semantic relationship between them. For example, "Sichuan" is "four" + "river", so it means "four rivers"... right? No! Even people from Sichuan have this misconception, but this is not what the name means. Sichuan was originally called the land of "Rivers and Gorges" (chuanxia). During the Song Dynasty there were four circuits (mini-provinces) here. So when the Yuan Dynasty established a new province here, they called it "Rivers and Gorges -- Four Circuits", and that got abbreviated to "Four" + "River". And this is one of the more transparent cases we have. Similarly, Guizhou is not the "Auspicious Prefecture" -- it is the "Gui Prefecture", where Gui is a nearby mountain; whether Gui here really was named for "auspiciousness" or if it originates from another name, we don't know. So it is wrong to call it the "Auspicious Prefecture". An even better example of this: Jilin appears to mean lucky forest, but it doesn't -- it comes from Manchu, "girin ula" (spelling may not be entirely accurate), meaning "along the river". "Lucky forest" is just how the Chinese characters chosen to represent the Manchu word "girin" turned out to be.

So I would strongly suggest not using "My Home Province" and "My Home Town" as a source for place names.

Another thing... I don't think adoption links are the most suitable links to insert into a general-purpose article about a Chinese province or city. -- ran (talk) 05:22, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

With regards to literal names: I've already compiled all of the etymologies of Chinese province names some time ago. You can see it in the info boxes in each province article.

As far as "schools" and "temples" go, usually the articles mention only universities (not high schools or anything below), and only a few temples of significant historical or sightseeing interest. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and encyclopedias usually mention things like major educational institutions or tourist sites, but they don't give adoption links. There are plenty of sites online that help prospective adoptive parents but that's not the role Wikipedia is trying to fill. -- ran (talk) 03:54, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
