Re: Justin King, your writing was excellent, and I agree that the article was certainly justified. It did read like it was written by someone who had personal knowledge of the situation, but I found it unbiased and neutral. Just a quick note to say that you seem to be using images simply on the justification that no copyright message was present on the original page - that does not automatically make the image copyright-free and suitable for use on Wikipedia. Have just read your comment on my talk page: I'm sorry if my comment seemed a little harsh, and I accept that the radical relaunch of BBC News 24 could be included as a significant event in the main timeline - I'll leave that decision to you!

When editing the article, I saw the words "new set" and automatically assumed (perhaps without reading the text properly) that the event was not significant enough to include in the BBC article timeline. Franco German locomotive: Looks as it was the same guy who posted it in the first place... What I'm worried about is, that in the beginning it looked like a rather matter-of-fact article; lately it looks more and more as becoming a "platform" for something. Bear in mind, that this term is now more or less a historical one, however it is dealt with like it were a quite recent term and mirroring what's going on in Europe right now (e.g. not being fully co-operative in the question of support for the invasion of Iraq on parts of France and Germany has probably nothing to do with it, both countries having different reasons for that, I think, but I will leave that to somebody much more experienced in judging politics and history). --Palapala 11:32, 2004 Jul 19 (UTC)

I've no idea how you come to pick me with regards of the post. First off, I'm not an admin. Second off, the Manual of Style is quite explicit on this. The entry should be on Sainsbury's, although if J Sainsbury's is the parent company and deserves an entry on its own (i.e. not for the supermarket), then that would be named accordingly. The rule is: use what's most common for the article name; mention other names at the beginning of the article. What's most common is not necessarily correct or official. Have a nice day! I only addressed the comments to you as you suggested moving the article and I wanted to give my thoughts. I understand your comments above regarding the MoS. However like I say the current redirects to "J Sainsbury plc" are not in the least confusing. I can't argue with an ideal but suggest the current situation is at least acceptable, if not perfect. I notice you have uploaded this image, but you don't seem to have tagged it. You say that it is a trademark of Tesco plc, but that doesn't help us with the copyright situation. If you are claiming fair use you need to tag the image as such and provide a brief rationale. It is important that all Wikipedia images have a tag indicating their copyright status. Hi H. I think the Sellafield image is great. It really improves the article. Unfortunately it looks as though the copyright notice you have reproduced is not compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License. There is nothing in GFDL to prevent Wikipedia being reproduced for commerical gain, and that would violate the copyright on the image. Any chance of finding a non-copyrighted one? Please add image copyright tags to uploaded images.

e.g. Image:LAKENHEATH.JPG -- is it the work of the US government, in which case it is public domain (good).

If you have inadvertently uploaded copyright images, list them on images for deletion and no-one will get cross. If however, you deliberately, knowingly and systematically violate copyright, then it might get a bit messy.(Please note that I am not trying to bite you, but trying to help you become a better Wikipedian.)

You were just a bit too quick, and I was a bit too slow. I got the image from www.af.mil and is PD due to the fact that it is a work of the US Federal gov. I fully understand the requirement to provide a label for an image I simply forgot the method for providing such a tag and had to find a similarly PD image (I used the C-17 image) to remind me that it was "PD-USGov-Military-Air Force" Thanks for you concern

Hi, You Wrote "restrict main page news to main news, not upcoming events." With all due respect, where are you living that you've escaped the fact that the pesidential election, (important in the news for months) is now AT THE TOP of every news bulletin? References: MSNBC, news.google.com, BBC News, BBC World, CNN, FOX News. Yes technically it is an upcoming event but given that it is at the forefront of most American's minds and further to the fore in many nations around the world I thought it deserve a place in ITN. Hi Mark,
while the presidential elections where at the top of every news bulletin because they write about what people are interested in most, our news section on the main page is meant to cover the most important events. An event is an event as soon as it happens. Would you cover the elections in Britain or Australia the day before they happen? The news section on the main page is so small that only most important new information should be covered. There was no new information in the fact that the presidential elections were upcoming as they had been reported about numerous times before, e.g. during the primaries, the party conventions, or the debates. [edit] Redirect you created at "TUI AG"

Hi, you created a redirect from TUI AG to TUI (travel), but there is currently no article at TUI (travel). (It may have been deleted since the redirect was created.) Wikipedia policy is to get rid of redirects to non-existent pages, and someone listed TUI AG on WP:RfD If you want the redirect to stay, you will need to create something at TUI (travel) (even a stub will do), or else the redirect will go away. If you do create the target, you don't have to do anything on WP:RfD (we'll eventually notice the target is there), but if you do, just delete the entry for TUI AG. Thanks! Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

OR

With all due respect, when adding comments to Talk and Discussion pages, the usual convention, which is much admired here at Wikipedia, is to sign one's username by appending three or four tildes, ~~~~, to one's messages. Four are preferred because that includes the date and time. This is especially true if one wants to avoid the appearance of committing hit-and-run on a User's Talk page. You should have said something a month ago when the change was made, I started a discussion about it on the page and since then no one has disagreed with it. Regardless, I refuse to include supporting cast because as I previously mentioned, it neglects well known actors such as Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell, and Desmond Llewelyn (M, Moneypenny, and Q respectifully) and it's also clutter and information that is better suited to be found on the films actual article page. There are many supporting actors and it really makes no sense to list of them on a "general" James Bond article.

That said, I don't really have a problem with listing the director of the movies in the table, but what we're trying to do on the article is reduce the amount of clutter, information that's not really pertinent to a "general" James Bond article. Recently, "James Bond" was added (not by myself) as a "feature article candidate" and it's come under fire due to information that can be slimmed down, information in lists, information that is missing totally that should be (ex. Music information, which will probably get a small paragraph with a main article at James Bond Theme. -- What I'm getting at is you have to ask yourself if what you want to add is reasonable for a "general" article on the character, the film series and the novel series. Instead of listing the directors, I think a better alternative would be to completely rewrite or merely expand the paragraph above the table with information of "recurring" directors. Directors such as John Glen, Terrence Young, Guy Hamilton etc should be mentioned, but not in a list. This is what I was planning to get to anyway, but I've just been busy lately. In this paragraph you could also mention major supporting actors that have been in many Bond films such as the actors I listed above who have been in 10 or more films, but I would keep this paragraph to a minimum to avoid redundancy with List of James Bond villains, List of James Bond allies, M, Miss Moneypenny, Q, and the individual film articles as well, but this paragraph needs to be expanded and I'd rather see this expanded than a larger and in some ways -bloated- table.

BTW, it's never something I would take on myself, but have you ever considered making the James Bond page just a short bio with prominent links to James Bond in literature/James Bond in books and James Bond in film. This would solve the size issues. (Probably not the best time to suggest it, given its nominated status!!)

Well I know why you did it initially. Admittingly I was going to do the same thing with the same information, but you did it first. I honestly don't know what we're going to do about trying to slim down the page. I thought slimming the book section might be the best course since most of it is just a list, but then as 23skidoo said it leaves the page open as "movie"-centric page and that's not exactly fair. I don't know I'll open a discussion about it on the actual article eventually.
As for my thoughts on Casino Royale, I really have none. My main concern is whether it's a faithful adaptation or if it's going to be another Die Another Day. I liked the first half of that film, but the second half ... not so much. As far as Bond films go, the director really doesn't matter to me all that much. There are some I've liked more than others, but what's more important is a great story and keeping Bond realistic and elements of the story/gadgets/vehicles feasible. That's just me though. I have no favorite as the next Bond either. I just don't want anyone too young. I think it's great that there will be a new actor in the role. I loved Brosnan, but I didn't like his movies, TWINE and DAD especially. I'm hoping with a new actor comes a new direction. K1Bond007 05:00, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

With all due respect, those don't sound like words of anger or any kind of irritation that I know. As is always the danger with any Wiki, disagreements like this issue can become quite embroiled and turn into fruitless edit wars, which it was only my intention to prevent with some direction. BAE Systems appear to have changed their policy (doubtless because the media et al never got it right), and I can accept that.

Actually, that's right. The BAe Systems variant was the one that was to be avoided upon pain of death, as they were trying to reinforce the fact that BAE was no longer an acronym, especially as it is now an international entity, such as BP et al. It's been a long time since I worked there, so I'm going to withdraw my insistence; especially as myself and my peers actually believed that BAE SYSTEMS was particularly ugly. In fact nobody I know likes the name, and we resorted to using an anagram (informally of course). We still often refer to the company as MESSY BEAST sugarfish 09:38, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

With respect to BAE SYSTEMS capitalisation, if you refer to the specific identity document here, it states that ‘BAE Systems’ in upper and lower case should be used:

  • Within the body of text
  • Within a sub-heading as part of text
  • Within a bullet point (within a presentation, for example)
  • Within an email address

and that ‘BAE SYSTEMS’ in upper case should only be used:

  • Within a heading or title
  • Within a postal address

This means that ‘BAE Systems’ and ‘BAE SYSTEMS’ are not interchangeable within the body of a text, and ‘BAE Systems’ is the format that should be used. Johnwalton 14:35, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The source for the heavy skewing in favour of the Government party is the BBC (Andrew Marr). I have added the reference to the article. This should really be Category:UK defence procurement, since the normal UK way of abbreviating United Kingdom is UK, and this is thus Wikipedia standard on UK-related topics. Contrariwise, the normal U.S. abbreviation for United States is U.S., and so that's the Wikipedia standard on U.S.-related topics. -- Anon.

I notice in the article about No. 12 Squadron that you started you state that the text came from a British Government website under Crown copyright protection. The terms of use of the Crown copyright information are not compatible with the GFDL so text in that form cannot be used. Where did you get the information from?

Following on from that, a new page needs to be written with the bits of the old one (like the table) that are not Crown copyright material. The old page then needs deleting as a copyvio and the new substituting in its place. David Newton 22:51, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

please accept that this was a misunderstanding of the licence afforded by Crown Copyright and its suitability for use on Wikipedia. You asked where it came from, the hyperlink I added has changed from www.raf.mod.uk/raflossiemouth to www.loscom.org.uk.

Thanks for that. I noticed at least one other squadron page with a similar situation, and I would appreciate it if you could do something similar there and anywhere else where this applies. What is perfectly alright is taking the text at the Crown copyright sites as a basis of facts and paraphrasing it for this site. If that is done, the source, strictly speaking, should be acknowledged. The most recent example where I have done that is the article I wrote on Denis Richards the historian. Anyone can add their own name to WP:RFA as a self-nomination any time they'd like, although some people who vote on RFA take a dim view of "self-noms". You can also ask someone you know to nominate you, or just wait to "get noticed". As far as I can tell, "getting noticed" basically takes doing things that lots of admins do (specifically one or more of Wikipedia:RC patrol or doing cleanup tasks associated with the various deletion processes or submitting lots of featured articles or even regularly voting on WP:RFA). Ah, the trick is that it's not in the template (but the article doesn't know that yet), so what you need to do in such circumstances is to do a blank save (e.g. click edit and then click save page without making any changes) on each page featuring the template.
