From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi, and allow me to offer what looks like a belated welcome to Wikipedia! I'm hoping you can take more pictures in and around Kourou! It's not a place that someone like myself can get to often :-) , so I have to visit vicariously through the pictures that others upload. If you haven't thought about it, Commons is a good place to upload more and make a little gallery for Kourou; as you can see from commons:Category:French Guiana, all we have now for the whole of French Guiana is maps and a couple photos of Cayenne. [edit] Adoption

Hello, Marialadouce! I see that you have expressed an interest in being adopted by an experienced editor. I accept your request, being an experienced editor myself. Whether you want to learn about wiki markup, find something to do, or just talk to somebody, I'm the one you can talk to - just leave a message on my talk page. Good luck with Wikipedia! --Daniel Olsen 04:37, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

If you're more interested in writing than maintenance, you could try expanding stubs. A list of all the stub categoies can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types. If you're fluent in french, you could work on articles in Category:France stubs and all of its subcategoies. I'm sure there will be information in the french articles that can be added to the english articles, and maybe a little bit the other way around as well. You may also be able to add links between french and english versions of articles (See Wikipedia:Interwiki_links#Interlanguage_link). Hopefully this should give you some things that you're interested in working on. If you have any questions, just drop me a lnie. Happy editing! --Daniel Olsen 18:32, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Userpage + userboxes

I think I've fixed your userpage the way you'd like it, try out some same text to see if I've done it right. The problem you had was that your userbox was set to float to the left instead of the right. The second problem was where to put the userbox, too high and it smooshed against the babelbox, too low and there's a gap. I think I found the right place. You like? --Daniel Olsen 03:34, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I bet the problem is that you have your browser window maximized. mine's usually at half-size or so, so I missed the formatting isue you found. All that needs to be done is to move the "about me" userbox a few lines lower (diff). That fixed the problem, right? --Daniel Olsen 23:54, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Photographs

There are lots of articles that need new photographs. Do you have a photograph of a Cecropia, in particular a monocultural (single species) grove of Cecropias on a flood plain? And a close up of an entire leaf? This article needs a lot of work, and there is a lot of interesting information that could be added about this important Amazonian tree, and the pictures would be a great start. If you look at the picture you will know what plant I am talking about. What a great offer, to contribute photographs of Amazonian plants. KP Botany 19:08, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I didn't know that Cecropia was a king of Athens, also. It's also the name of a moth. I will look up its etymology in my Stearns (a writer on botanical Latin who explains the derivation of many names, even Greek ones) and Greek books. It's not a stupid question, it's curiosity, and everyone, it seems to me, is curious about how plants get their names.
Please upload to Wikimedia commons, as TeunSpaans suggests, as this plant is an important plant in helping to prepare unstable soils at the edge of the water for other plants to take root in the rain forests of Central and South America--it merits articles all over the Wikipedia world, and a good picture, even if not identified to species level will be a very valuable contribution. I think the most helpful thing would be to post a note to the Talk:Cecropia with the name of the image in WikiMedia so anyone can add it to the article.
For information on the photos it would be helpful if you include your country, if you feel comfortable giving this information. I am uploading local pictures (California) to WikiMedia right now, but have not learned how to categorize them usefully. When I do, I will categorize yours in as many botany categories as I can think of. Or ask others to do so.
Please take as many pictures of the flowers and the fruits as you would like to and upload as you have time. I am certain they will also be valuable. Amazonia has the most diverse flora of probably the entire planet, but if you narrow it down a bit to country, I or someone else may be able to find a good on-line flora for you or someone who is willing to identify the plant species you photograph.
This is very generous of you and could really improve Wikipedia articles on one of the world's premium biodiversity regions. Thanks KP Botany 20:40, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Also, the Cecropia is pretty distinctive just by the appearance of its leaves and how fast growing it is, something you will have noticed.
http://www.evergreen.edu/ants/ANTPLANTS/CECROPIA/crown.original.jpg
http://www.tulane.edu/~ldyer/lsacatold/images/plants/cecob.html

With other plants, I will explain their identification in layman's and botanical terms if someone identifies them so you can learn about the plants you are photographing as you do it, if you'd like. I can't imagine anything more interesting than living in Amazonia, shooting pictures of fantastic and unique plants, and learning a bit about them at the same time. Others will answer questions, also, I'm sure, so that your contributions are useful. KP Botany 21:20, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome

Welcome to Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants! I have tried to answer your question about photos on the talk page of the project. TeunSpaans 19:52, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Robert Aron

Hello, I very much appreciate your editing of my translation. I was taught in American English to put two spaces after each period; I think that Canadians put only one after. That and my laptop's screen is broken (I can only use the right half) and I have to shrink windows down to make them readable, it probably affects my formatting. I will definitely take heed of your suggestions and get to work on some other members of the Academie.--Theloniouszen 11:58, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Commons

I seen that you added the commons tag onto some images that are not in the commons. I have looked for them but I haven't found them in the commons so I have removed the tag from the images. -- Bidgee 15:32, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

I have now found them however you didn't ask me if you could upload them to the commons (It would be nice to let me know then doing it behind my back since I did take the photos) and they don't have the same copyright license please remove them from the commons or I will remove all of my images from Wikipedia. -- Bidgee 15:43, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
I apologize if I have upset you as I didn't mean to upset you. :( I have been under a lot of stress ATM and something little can turn into something big. It would have been nice to ask me or just put a little note in my talk page. I went over the top last night with delete them however if you can put the same copyright information and Summary as what they have on Wikipedia they can stay. I have an account and some photos under Bidgee on the commons as well. - Bidgee 00:04, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Marialadouce, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] Hello!

Hello, Marialadouce! I noticed that you recently joined Esperanza, and posted on the talk page that you were looking for something to translate. I was going to suggest the French Collaboration Project, but I see you've already joined!

If I may offer my personal suggestion, I've tried to work on Jean-Jacques Rousseau (author-filmmaker), but it isn't going well. As it stands it's an automatically-translated version of the original french article. It's pretty unreadable at the moment, and my limited French can't do it justice.

Anyway, just a suggestion! Congrats on joining EA, and I hope you enjoy being a member :-) — Editor at Large(speak) 23:30, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

You are welcome, and thanks for the offer! I really appreciate it. I cheer myself up now by looking at my talk pages, it never fails :-) — Editor at Large(speak) 02:05, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ku Klux Klan

Hi, it looked like you might have been having some trouble clearing up the vandalism in Ku Klux Klan. Are you editing the article to manually remove the nonsense, or are you reverting it to the last known-good version? See WP:REVERT for more details. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 15:04, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

No problem! Also, when reverting vandalism, it's a good idea to warn the vandal (see WP:VAND). In this case, the user has already passed several warnings, so I reported him to WP:AIV and he has been blocked from editing for 31 hours. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 15:11, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

I saw your Saddam Hussein revert; excellent! I went ahead and warned the vandal. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 15:15, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

No, there's no rule about what you have to say in the edit summary when you revert vandalism. I've got some automated help; it generates the message you see when I just click a "Rollback" button. You can just type a message like "rv" or "revert vandalism" or "revert to last good version by xxxx", whatever seems to make sense. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 15:57, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello!

Saw your messages on the Coffee Lounge, about deleting a page. I'm not angry at all or anything, but just to let you know that that really isn't the place for those questions. Instead, check out The Help Desk for further questions. Or, of course, you can always ask me or anyone else you know through editing. See ya! DoomsDay349 01:00, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Also a random smile. DoomsDay349 01:00, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey. Even in times of stress, it's always good to promote WikiLove. And it's good to help out your less experienced comrades. I was new once; heck, I'm still learning stuff! (all hail the Help Desk!) And I know how important it is to have more experienced peers around. Like I said, come to me for anything you like, and I'll be glad to help. DoomsDay349 20:59, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Concordia Newsletter

NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

[edit] Help out now!

  • Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
  • Give people the Civility Barnstar.
  • Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
  • Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
  • Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

[edit] Decision Making

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

If you wish to opt of of further talk-page communications, just let us know here.

WP:TIE has been revamped. The translation project is now at Wikipedia:Translation. Please join us. Happy editing!

Hello! A while ago you signed up to help translate articles from other Wikipedias at Wikipedia:Available translators. This page has since become obsolete and has been replaced by userbox templates.
If you are still interested in translating, you may sign up again by using the following syntax on your userpage:
{{Userboxtop}} : {{Translator|es|Spanish}} : {{Proofreader|fr|French}} : [...] : {{Userboxbottom}}
We hope to see you soon on Wikipedia:Translation!
Quoique j'aime encore l'idée de mettre le message dans une boîte dans une couleur différente de la page de discussion, pour qu'elle soit plus visible et plus "chaleureuse" - le texte seul me semble bien tristounet.
Marialadouce | parlami 17:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Tu vois moyen d'améliorer {{Translation/Talkpage}} ?

Thanks! (Had a slow day, found the red links and lack of sequential consort boxes annoying). Michaelsanders 21:17, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
