I'm a 21-year old geography (subset: meteorology) and computer science major attending college in Indiana. I'm a self-described student of the American Civil War, and an avid history fan in general.

Lately, due to boredom and lack of things to do, I have taken a more active role in Wiki. Currently, I can be found doing one of three or four things: Browsing the New Pages for anything that merits a "Speedy Delete" tag (utter nonsense, mostly), following and contributing to the ongoing discussion in WP:SCH, editing random articles, and browsing in search of things that need to be done.

I now consider myself an "official" christened Wikipedian. This page has been vandalized twice. As someone else put it, "you know you're doing something right when the User Page vandals show up."

This spring I will be kicking off a research project that will take me to Gratiot County, Michigan for a few days to do some source-hunting so I can improve on town articles located within that county. I hope to come away from my trip with enough historical information on the major towns in the county that I will be able to significantly improve their articles.

[edit] Positions

As an active voter in the RfA process, I feel the need to create a small subsection of my user page to explain some of why I vote (or don't vote) the way I do in the RfA process.

  • First of all, I will likely not vote in RfAs where there is an overwhelming amount of support, unless I find something that I completely disagree with and feel must be pointed out or brought to the attention of everyone.
  • Second of all, I do not agree or believe in "editcountitis". Admins are not necessarily prolific editors; the purposes and duties of an admin do not always require them to write half the Wikipedia themselves. Yes, I will vote oppose on editors who, I feel, have not been around sufficiently. Beyond that, however, I do not have any certain "baseline" number of edits that an editor must reach before they can be considered for the position of an Admin.
  • Finally, and most importantly, I believe that an Admin must, above all else, present a positive image of the Wikipedia to newcomers and to the outside community. Recently, Wikipedia has been featured in a negative light in several editorials and on outside webpages. This negative light can only be countered by Wiki showing its best face -- by Admins presenting themselves as proefssionals. As Wikipedia grows and more people come here, the attitudes, behaviors, and conduct of our Admins will help determine just how successful this project is and how far off the ground it gets. I, for one, remember my first dealings with Admins... I walked away impressed by how well they presented themselves. If an individual applies to be an Admin, I will hold them to this same ruler -- especially since I would believe that I would be held to it as well.

If I ever get more time, I'll add more in this space.
