Mark Dodds opened ‘The Sun and Doves’ in Camberwell in 1995
He did landscape and garden design before setting up the pub, a career which he approached out of catering, having managed a high profile West End night club for several years. His gardening days gave hime a vision of making his business 'green' from the outset. The mid 1990's proved this to be wildly ambitious - even now his local authority does not collect commercial waste for recylcing.
He now has a mission to make The Sun and Doves the UK’s first Carbon Neutral or even Carbon Positive (generating a surplus of renewable power) gastro pub. Improving the efficiency of the building has been a huge undertaking but by installing energy saving bulbs, improving insulation, using Good Energy 100% renewable electricity supply and even by harvesting rain water to irrigate the garden, The Sun and Doves is striving to be the UK’s most sustainable and forward thinking home from home.
“I’m determined to make the business genuinely sustainable through a combination of working hard on energy efficiency, the implementation of a good recycling strategy, eventually installing micro renewable generation on site and scrutinising every aspect of our supply chain. In the meantime using 100% renewable electricity from Good Energy is a great way to substantially reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental impact of the business. My immediate goal is to get The Sun and Doves to Carbon Neutral status and use it as a model for a chain of Zero Impact Pubs across London and the south east” Mark Dodds, Owner
