Maryland Route 17 is a 29.49-mile-long north-south road in Frederick County, Maryland.
[edit] Route description
Beginning at the Potomac River Bridge in Brunswick, Route 17 runs north through Rosemont, Burkittsville, and Middletown. Crossing Interstate 70 at Myersville at mile marker 18 (mile 42 on I-70), it runs generally north through Ellerton and Wolfsville on its way to its terminus at the Washington County line on South Mountain.
[edit] History
Originally this route was signed MD 33 and the current MD 33 was signed as MD 17. The numbers were swapped in the late 1930s. Later, Route 17 was broken in two when the maintenance of a section of the route was assumed by the county. Part of Route 17 north of U.S. 40 was assigned MD 153. Eventually this situation was reversed, and the Route 17 designation was restored to the entire route.
