The Third Congressional District of Maryland elects a representative to the United States House of Representatives every two years. The district comprises portions of Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties, as well as a significant part of the independent city of Baltimore. The seat is currently represented by Ben Cardin (D), with John Sarbanes (D) recently elected to succeed Cardin, who is moving on to the Senate. Both of Maryland's current US Senators, Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski represented this district, and Senator-elect Cardin also comes to the senate after serving as the 3rd district's representative. For more information, see Maryland congressional elections, 2006.
