Mary Mahler

Mary Mahler began her career with Social Security Administration as a claims representative in New York City, in 1974. She has been promoted into positions of increasing responsibility ever since. These included operation supervisor, staff specialist in Human Resources, staff assistant to the Assistant Regional Commissioner, Management and Budget, Senior Analyst, Public Affairs, and Director, Human Resources Section. In 1990, Mary became the Director Regional Public Affairs and was named the Regional Communications Director in May 2000.

Mary was selected for SSA’s Senior Executive Service Program in 2001. She successfully completed her assignment as Area Director in the Chicago Region and other assignments in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Office of Employment and Support Programs (OESP) in Social Security’s national headquarters in Baltimore.

In May 2005, Mary was selected for the Senior Executive Service position of Assistant Regional Commissioner for Management and Operations and Support by Social Security’s National Commissioner, Jo Anne B. Barnhart. In this position, Mary provides executive leadership and direction to six Center Directors and over 200 staff and is responsible for the regional budget, staffing, program policy, systems support, labor relations, personnel management and security and integrity.

Mary is the recipient of three Commissioner's Citations, Social Security's highest honorary award. She has twice been honored with Regional Commissioner's citations and other honorary and monetary awards.

Mary was born and raised in Chicago and is a graduate of the University of Illinois. Mary is married to Dr. Vincent A. Mahler, and they have three children.
