Mary Farkas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mary Farkas (1911 - 1992) was a Rinzai Zen Buddhist and longtime director of The First Zen Institute of America founded by Sokei-an in 1930 in New York City. Aside from Sokei-an, FZIA has had no formal teacher since and Mary was uncomfortable holding the title director (she preferred secretary). Mary was a pioneer in bringing Zen Buddhism to the United States audience, and were it not for her years of service and dedication FZIA would have closed its doors upon Sokei-an's death in 1945.
