[edit] Biography

Martha McGarrigle Wainwright was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is the daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and the sister of Rufus Wainwright. She has frequently appeared on recordings by her family members, and has released several independent EPs. Her full length self-titled debut was released in 2005 by Drowned In Sound, and debuted at number 18 on the Canadian album sales charts.

Her band also includes her cousin Lily Lanken, the daughter of her mother's sister (and collaborator) Anna McGarrigle. Wainwright frequently tours and records with family friend Teddy Thompson.

She performed with Northern Irish/Scottish band Snow Patrol's singer Gary Lightbody for the 2006 Snow Patrol album Eyes Open on the song Set The Fire To The Third Bar.

She recently performed on popular late night UK show Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and at the Secret Policeman's Ball.

Also she sung a duet with the Magic Numbers at the Secret Policeman's Ball: a cover of Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released".

Martha Wainwright demonstrated her coquettish sense of humour when she challenged famous comedian Ross Noble on the Australian Television program 'Spicks and Specks' by saying 'I have a number 1 single... do you?'. Noble responded 'I sell Bloody Monkey Fluffing Aerosol on a late night shopping channel... do you?' which was a take on her song, 'Bloody Mother Fu**ing Asshole'
