Martha Jefferson Hospital is a nonprofit community hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was founded in 1903 by eight local physicians. In 2004, the facility had a capacity of 201 beds, including 176 acute-care beds. The hospital employed a staff of 1,500 and had 365 affiliated physicians.

In its fiscal year ending September 30, 2003, Martha Jefferson Hospital:

  • Delivered 1,717 babies

  • Registered 9,185 admissions and 136,917 outpatient visits
  • Had 9,435 operating room visits

The hospital serves an 8-county region, so it is common for children who grew up in seemingly distant parts of Virginia to discover they were born at the same hospital, Martha Jefferson.
