The Marshall School of Business (also known as USC Marshall School of Business) is the business school at the University of Southern California. It is the largest of USC's 17 professional schools. Its Dean from April 2004 until February 2006 was Yash Gupta, formerly of the University of Washington. It was named after alumnus Gordon Marshall, who gave $35 million in 1997 to name the school.

[edit] Background

The USC Marshall School of Business was established in 1920. It is the oldest AACSB accredited school of business in Southern California. The Entrepreneur Program, the first of its kind in the United States, was established in 1972.

[edit] Campus

The main building is $20 million, 55,000 square feet Popovich Hall (named after alumni J. Kristofer Popovich and Jane Hoffman Popovich ’65, with their $5 million gift) which opened in 1999 as the most technologically advanced business school building in the United States with eight case study rooms with audio-video teleconferencing, thirteen Experiential Learning classrooms with the ability to transmit lectures and presentations throughout the building, more than 1,100 data hookups throughout the building and courtyard and more than 15 miles of fiber-optic and cable wiring in its Modern Career Resource Center. In addition, seven story Hoffman Hall (an eight story I.M. Pei designed building named for Leslie Hoffman, father of Jane Hoffman Popovich that opened in 1973) nearby houses the Crocker Business Library and Computer Services.

Marshall is related to the Leventhal School of Accounting, which was named after Elaine and Kenneth Leventhal after their $25 million gift. Ph.D. degrees in accounting are offered. Accounting classes are offered in a renovated historic building.

In 2004, the Executive MBA (EMBA) program was available in Shanghai, China. Additionally, MBA.PM program (part-time) students can take first year classes at the Orange County campus in Irvine. In 2006, Marshall will open a San Diego satellite campus for the EMBA program.

[edit] Rankings

The part time program is a top 5 program and the school is considered a top 30 business school by both U.S. News & World Report and BusinessWeek (at times it has been a top 20 in both publications). Leventhal's accounting program is ranked in the top 5. The Wall Street Journal ranked Marshall in 2005 as one of the top 10 graduate business schools in the country based on recruiter willingness.
