Marquis Theatre
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Marquis Theatre is a Broadway theater located on the third floor of the Marriott Marquis hotel at 1535 Broadway in midtown Manhattan. It was designed by architect John C. Portman, Jr. and has a seating capacity of 1590.
Because construction of the hotel involved the demolition of five legitimate theaters - the Helen Hayes, the Morosco, the Bijou, and remnants of the Astor and the Gaiety Theatre, the latter of which by then was the Embassy Five Movie Theatre - New York City officials permitted the Marriott chain to construct the new property only if it agreed to include a theater within the structure.
The Marquis - with state-of-the-art backstage facilities and a sleekly modern auditorium - opened on July 9, 1986 with a series of concerts by Shirley Bassey.
Notable productions housed by the Marquis include The Drowsy Chaperone, Andrew Lloyd Weber's short-lived musical The Woman in White starring Maria Friedman, the Tony Award-winning revival of Jerry Herman's La Cage Aux Folles, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Victor/Victoria with Julie Andrews, Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette Peters (followed by Reba McEntire), The Goodbye Girl with Peters and Martin Short, Man of La Mancha with Raul Julia, Damn Yankees, and Me and My Girl.
