Marneus Calgar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marneus Augustus Calgar is a character from the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe. Also known as Lord Macragge, he is the legendary Chapter Master of the Ultramarines. Among his counsellors are the Master of Sanctity, Chaplain Cassius, and Chief Librarian Tigurius, among the Astartes' most powerful psykers.
Calgar's exploits have earned him fame throughout the Imperium. He led the Imperium to victory in the First Tyrannic War. Although the chapter incurred grievious losses in this battle - not least the loss of its entire first company - Calgar's stubborn defence and crushing defeat of the Tyranids has become the stuff of legend on the worlds of Ultramar and beyond.
Calgar's fame and intractable pride have earned him many high-ranking enemies within the Imperium, some of which are thought to have engineered a Court of Inquiry regarding his suppression of an uprising of Colony Beta/54. Calgar was exonerated of all charges.
Recent reports have falsely claimed that Calgar was slain during the defence of Ichar IV; He is, in fact, alive, well, and still leading the Ultramarines against the enemies of the Emperor.

[edit] The Gauntlets of Ultramar
Marneus Calgar fights using the revered artifacts known as the Gauntlets of Ultramar. They were taken by Ultramarine Primarch Roboute Guilliman after slaying a Champion of Chaos in hand-to-hand combat after the Gamalia Reclusiam Massacre during the Great Crusade. The Gauntlets are of unknown origin; so far no Techno-Magus has ever been able to penetrate their armoured shell to discover their inner workings. The weapons are permitted only to be worn by the Chapter Master himself, and at all other times are kept within a crystal case within the Shrine of the Great Primarch. In game terms they manifest as a pair of Powerfists with Storm Bolters.
[edit] Wargaming
In the context of the tabletop game, Marneus Calgar may be included in an Ultramarines army of at least 1,500 points as an HQ choice. He may be fielded with either Artificer armour with Iron Halo or Terminator armour, and may be accompanied by an Ultramarine's Honor Guard Command squad, but only if he forgos the deepstrike ability possessed by the terminator armour. The current model is the one in terminator armour, an older model with him in artificier armour is available through direct services.
[edit] Notable Quote
"Know this, son of Guilliman. The father of our Chapter watches over us always. He knows your soul, your strengths and, aye, even your doubts. The chain of command must not be broken or we are nothing. Discipline and order are everything on the battlefield and the army lives by the credo will triumph."
