Marnardal is a municipality in the county of Vest-Agder, Norway. It is an inland municipality, bordering in the north on Evje og Hornnes municipality in Aust-Agder county, Audnedal municipality in the west, Lindesnes, Mandal and Søgne in the South, and Songdalen and Vennesla in the east.
In 1964, Øyslebø, Laudal and Bjelland municipalities were merged into Marnardal municipality.
[edit] The name
The name is a revival (from 1965) of the Norse form Marnardalr. The first element is the genitive case of the rivername Morn (now Mandalselva), the last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'. The meaning of the rivername is unknown (maybe derived from marr m 'sea').
The river is the best for salmon fishing in the south of Norway.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1987). It shows three pine cones.
