Marmet, West Virginia

Marmet (pronounced mar-MET) is a city in Kanawha County, West Virginia, USA, along the Kanawha River. The population was 1,693 at the 2000 census. Marmet was incorporated in 1921. It is named for the Marmet Coal Company, owned by William and Edwin Marmet, which began the development of large tracts of coal lands at that location in 1899. It was first named Elizaville, after Mrs. Leonard Morris, original settler here in 1773. Later, the city was known as Browntown, after Charles Brown, who was financially interested in the local salt business.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (9.03%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,693 people, 750 households, and 465 families residing in the city. The population density was 463.6/km² (1,202.7/mi²). There were 853 housing units at an average density of 233.6/km² (606.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.58% White, 0.65% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.47% of the population.

There were 750 households out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.75.

In the city the population was spread out with 18.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,779, and the median income for a family was $34,345. Males had a median income of $31,042 versus $21,111 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,803. About 13.1% of families and 16.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.7% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over.
