[edit] History

In the manga and anime series Oh My Goddess!, Marller or Mara (マーラー Mārā) was once the childhood friend of the goddesses who are the main characters, though now she's a demon. Urd and Mara used to be very good friends, but got separated when Urd chose to be a goddess. Though Mara is the arch-rival of the goddesses she likes being with them. Her actual duty is to increase the market share of the demons on earth, her main duty should be signing demonic contracts with humans and her side duties includes ruining the activities of the goddesses, disrupting the efforts of the goddesses and to make them suffer. However, she normally forgets about her main duty and only goes around doing the side duties because she had decided in the very beginning of her appearance that the market share will become 100% when the goddesses are all gone from this part of the market. Mara has two weaknesses: She can't stand good luck charms and she can't stop dancing when she hears rock music (or disco in the Dark Horse English translation).

[edit] Personality

She seems more determined and mischievous than cruel, She probably felt abandoned when Urd chose to become a goddess in full, knowing that it would most likely lead to her having to end their friendship. This past situation and her duties as a demon make her have a slight case of tunnel vision in that she seems to regard ruining the lives of the goddesses a top priority. Despite this she does seem to enjoy the company of the goddesses whenever the opportunity to hang out with them presents itself. In the TV series, she is revealed to suffer from insecurity and self doubt due to her inability to increase the demons market share (due in no small part to the goddesses presence), to the point of bringing her to tears when Urd tells her that she has no talent.

[edit] Trivia

  • Although written as Marller in official sources, Mara's name may originate from the temptation demon Mara in Buddhism, or the Scandinavian nightmare spirit Mara.
  • It is shown in the manga that the demonic contract has a lot of power as long as the human has a strong will for the wish to apply, it is some what more accurately fulfilled than the wish granted by the goddesses, presumably because the power to fulfill the wish comes from both the demon and the human unlike the goddesses part only fulfill wishes with their own power. In the manga, Mara actually stated that the demonic contract more accurately fulfill human desires than goddess contracts if you believe the word of demons. However, different from the wish granted by the goddesses, the demonic contract comes with a price. The price seems to be normally a frustrating statement at the signing of the contract but than forced into application if needed, often altering the wish of the human to get power even goddesses cannot oppose.
  • Marller has gone through many costume changes throughout the series from formal military-like uniforms (in which she is sometimes mistaken for a man) to more revealing and feminine outfits.
  • In the TV series, it is revealed that Marller holds a part-time job at a convenience store (and is close to being promoted to store manager), something which ironically, was reffered to her by Belldandy.
  • She is often on the receiving end of some highly unusal and amusing forms of punishment from Hild, ranging from being forced to constantly listen to rock (or disco in the Dark Horse version) to being digitized into a fighting game where she was beaten up by her own henchmen.
