Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas (born 1953 in Cape Town, South Africa) is an artist combining elements of Expressionism with conceptual art into ink and watercolour pieces and oil paints on canvas.

Dumas studied at the University of Cape Town fom 1972 to 1975. The aim of her work is to show the relationships between art, female models and even pornography. Many of the starting points for her work are polaroid photographs of her friends and lovers, whilst she also references magazines and pornographic material. Marlene Dumas also paints portraits of children and erotic scenes to impact the world of contemporary art.
