Marlene Daudén

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marlene Dauden is one of the Philippines' greatest drama actresses par excellence of all time who achieved her legendary status as a film thespian in the 1950-1970s. Durign the height of her fame, she was one of the most bankable stars of Sampaguita Pictures, one of the leading Philippine movie studios of the era.

Marlene Dauden was born to a Spanish-Irish father and a Spanish mother. She graduated from Saint Scholastica's College and was entirely a stranger to Tagalog, then the main dialect used for mainstream Filipino movies because Marlene only spoke English at school and Spanish at home. When she was discovered, this was the one hurdle that she had to overcome before becoming a bankable star. Nevertheless, with the help of Rosa Mia and her sacrifices from attending social functions while filming was going on to memorize her Tagalog lines, she was able to ace her acting career.

She started out doing bit parts until she was cast in heavy supporting roles such as the blacksheep sister of Paraluman in Anino ni Bathala (1958), where she won her first FAMAS Award. Due to her bankability and popularity, as well as her recent FAMAS win, she was then cast as the lead star in her first leading role in the movie Rosa Rossini (1959). After Sampaguita Pictures declined in the 1960s, she went freelance, which gave her more freedom to choose more challenging dramatic roles, and winning awards in the process.

Marlene Dauden is forever etched in Filipino film history as the first Filipino actor in history to ever win five acting awards from the lone award-givign body in the Philippines during her time, the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS). She won Best Supporting Actress for her roles in the films Anino ni Bathala (1958), Kamandag (1959) and Sapagkat Kami'y Tao Lamang (1963). The latter was said to be her favorite film of hers. She also won two Best Actress awards for the films Sa Bawat Pintig ng Puso (1964) and Kapag Puso'y Sinugatan (1967). She was also nominated by the FAMAS for an additional five times: Best Supporting Actress for Talipandas (1958), where she beat herself for the award; Best Actress for Gumuhong Bantayog (1960), in which she was defeated by Charito Solis; Best Actress for Mila Rosa (1965), where she was defeated by Barbara Perez; Best Actress for Alipin ng Busabos (1968), where she was defeated by Charito Solis; and Babae, Ikaw ang Dahilan (1972), where she was defeated by Boots Anson - Roa and Vilma Santos for the honors.

Marlene Dauden's last film before migrating to the United Sattes was Kung Kaya Mo, Kaya Ko Rin (1978), with Christopher de Leon. She also appeared in Combat Killers (1980) with Leopoldo Salcedo, but the film was not released theatrically. She is married to former basketball star Ernesto Hernaez and is now living in California, USA, where she works as a medical office manager and runs a lumpia business, far from the lights, glitz and glamor that made THE Marlene Dauden.
