Marion Smith is a Councillor with North Down Borough Council, having been elected in 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2005. With a wealth of experience in resolving a wide range of problems relating to local services and is a full time Councillor.

Her petition against the implementation of domestic charges was followed a campaign of opposition to the education Minister's proposals for post primary education. Her impute into the Reform of Local Government is that, the interests and needs of people in this country must be first and foremost in any proposals being made. An appointment to the Local Government Task Force Shared Services Sub Group in connection with the Review of Public Administration was welcomed.

As the first woman to serve as Vice Chairman of the Local Government Staff Commission she is also a 'Champion for Women in Local Government' and is Chair of Policy one of the main committees within the local Council.

Close the her heart is her involvement with the establishment of Bangor Community Hospital which she performed the opening ceremony for, as well she established a support group which helps provide patients needs. Education is to the fore, as is shown by her work involving the need for the renovation of Bangor's Carnegie Library.

Within local government she was elected by her fellow coucillors, as Deputy Mayor and Mayor.
