Marion, New York

Marion is a town in Wayne County, New York, USA. The population was 4,974 at the 2000 census. It is named after Revolutionary War Hero Francis Marion.

The Town of Marion is an interior town near the center of the county. Marion is about 20 miles east of Rochester, New York and 50 miles west of Syracuse, New York.

Marion was in the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The area was first settled around 1795.

The Town of Marion was created from the Town of Williamson in 1825 as the "Town of Winchester." It was re-named in 1826 for Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 75.8 km² (29.3 mi²). 75.6 km² (29.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.24%) is water.

New York State Route 21 is a north-south highway in the town.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,974 people, 1,759 households, and 1,356 families residing in the town. The population density was 65.8/km² (170.3/mi²). There were 1,827 housing units at an average density of 24.2/km² (62.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.09% White, 0.68% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.33% of the population.

There were 1,759 households out of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.5% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% were non-families. 18.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $48,205, and the median income for a family was $52,484. Males had a median income of $40,086 versus $24,545 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,414. About 3.3% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 3.7% of those age 65 or over.
