Born in Sassari, Sardinia, Mario Berlinguer (IPA [berliŋ'gwɛr]) (1891-1969) was a lawyer and was politically engaged on the side of Republicans (indirectly descending from Giuseppe Mazzini's La Giovine Italia).

Father of Giovanni and Enrico Berlinguer.
