Marienburg

The names Marienburg (help·info) or Frauenburg were given to many towns in German-speaking countries in the Middle Ages.

The names usually originated in the construction of a fortified (hence -burg) chapel, church, or monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, also descriptively called Frau (woman, wife). Ex. [Marienburg Abbey:[1]. There are many fortresses, castles, and towns with the name Marienburg, such as:

• Marienburg (Mosel), a former Augustinian monastery built near the ruins of a Roman fortress in Zell an der Mosel near Trier, Germany, now a youth center of the Archbishopric of Trier
• Köln-Marienburg, a suburb of Cologne
• Maribor, in Slovene Styria (Štajerska) and second biggest city of the country.

In the Warhammer Fantasy world, Marienburg (Warhammer) is a fictional city.
