Marie Trainer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marie Trainer is the mayor of Haldimand County. She came to hold the office after defeating the incumbent, Lorraine Bergstrand in the 2004 Haldimand County municipal election.

The county council recently voted to replace her with the deputy mayor as its spokesperson after comments Ms. Trainer made regarding the Caledonia land dispute[1] Council found Trainer guilty of harassing her Administrative Assistant after it had hired an impartial consultant to investigate the charges. Trainer was asked to reimburse the County the $10,000 cost of the consultant's fees but she has refused. She was instructed by the consultant's report to take anger management courses but as far as is known she did not comply. Based on their findings, the consultants also prepared a second report on her activities in office. Under Freedom of Information rules, Trainer will not allow this report to be released to the public, because it would potentially be damaging to Trainer's campaign for re-election in November 2006.She ran her last campaign on a promise of a zero tax increase and pledged not to take a pay raise, but failed to keep these promises. According to Trainer herself, property taxes in Haldimand County increased 16 per cent this year alone. Under her leadership, the Council wasted $250,000 trying to sell the town's hydro company. She recently called provincial minister Monte Kwinter "an idiot" on the air. The Honourable Mr. Kwinter is the Minister of Commmunity, Safety and Correctional Services. The Provincial and Federal governments have requested that Trainer not be at the negotiating table for the First Nations land dispute in Caledonia.
